“When Jesus saw his mother, and the disciple whom he loved standing beside her, he said to his mother, ‘Woman here is your son,’ Then he said to the disciple, ‘Here is your mother.’ And from that hour, the disciple took her into his own home.”
- John 19:26-27
The main purpose of the Legion of Mary is to give glory to God through the sanctification of its members. The members increase their knowledge of the Catholic Faith and develop their prayer life while simultaneously bringing the Faith to others.
Members are able to grow in their faith by service in the community in imitation of Christ and Mary. The Legion seeks to develop and strengthen its members to service the Church in its mission to spread the Gospel as well as help to discern their personal call to holiness.
Works of service include doing home to home visitation for a parish, visiting parish shut-ins and the lonely in nursing homes, distributing Catholic literature to people, assisting as a CCD teacher’s aid and parish organization projects, etc. In short, its members do whatever type of evangelization the pastor of a parish would like them to do through works of service for the parish and community.
Members meet once a week for prayer, planning and discussion in a family setting. Then, they do two hours of definite work of service under the guidance of the spiritual director.
The Legion is particularly suited for handling the most challenging work and needs of any parish. It offers each parish the opportunity to have an evangelization team which operates every week in an organized and prayerful way.
The Legion of Mary offers the pastor a Marian, Christ-centered method of helping his parishioners discern and foster their personal call to holiness and provides the pastor with invaluable cooperators for the extension of his parochial mission.
The Legion of Mary is open to all Catholics who:
The first step is to be a guest at a meeting. Guests are always welcome and can go on one of the work assignments if they choose. No obligation or commitment is required.
